Apple Watch Series 8

So you really if you want something that's more i  suppose functional with a bunch of other features   you really want the ultra well let's open it up  here and as you can see it's packaged just like last year's we'll set that piece aside and here's  the watch itself so we have the watch and a new band that i picked up let's go ahead and flip this  over and pull off these pull tabs and open it up and there's another one over here and there we are let's open this up we'll open  the band up after i haven't seen that band before either so let's see what we've got it shouldn't  really be any different than what we had last year but inside of course we have our paperwork just  talks about the watch itself nothing exciting there and then of course we have our charger it's  a fast charger just like last year where it's usbc so we have usbc and then to the charger  itself where you can place it on there so it's sort of aluminum or it's not as  exciting as last time but you can see there i don't even typically use these i have a stand  next to my bed that i normally use so let's put this back and here's the watch itself now again  it's in a biodegradable sort of packaging where it's no longer plastic and we just slide it out  like this now i don't think this is going to look any different than what i already have maybe  a little bit shinier let's see if we can go around the outside edge here so let me remove the  bands and these for those of you that are curious this is a nomad band a stainless steel band and  i've been using them for years i really like them and here's the new watch versus the old watch  now on the front of course it's going to be very hard to tell the difference you can see  on the side not really any difference there so exactly the same nothing different here on the  sides no difference there and then on the bottom you're really not going to see a difference  so no physical differences there however we do have a new temperature sensor this year  although the sensors don't look very different  so you can see on the left it says series 7.  it's a little bit dirty from being on my wrist   and then series 8 on the right 45 millimeters now  let's go ahead and turn it on and get it paired so i'll probably use these same nomad bands with  it of course i may try out the ultra and go with that instead so let me set the old one aside and  we'll get it set up now we'll turn it on we'll  just press and hold and while it's being set up  then we'll unbox the band so there it's turned on  and then we can pair it with the new iphone  14 pro max so you'll see there give it just a moment to boot up and now we can set up the  apple watch so we'll bring it close to our phone give it just a moment to get everything set  up there we go it says use your iphone to set up this apple watch so we'll hit continue now  we can set it up for myself or a family member set up for myself and then hold the camera just  like you do with an iphone so you have this sort of qr code thing that it's looking at this digital  sort of mass here or nebula whatever this is see if we can get the reflections away from  it and get it to scan it took a moment and now it's paired now we can move everything over from  our previous apple watch so we'll hit continue it's pretty simple to do give it just a moment  here and now it says connecting to your apple watch and this may take a moment so we'll wait for  that to complete now i've set those aside let's look at this watch band this is the 45 millimeter  midnight sport loop xl so i need that for my large wrist let's go ahead and open it up so we'll  just open it like this take a look at it here and we'll continue setup so we'll continue  this at the same time so we'll hit agree there we go and signing into your account let's see what this band looks like so again we've  got a little bit of paperwork in there and then  the watch band itself so we'll open this up and  you can see it's a typical nylon loop watch band it just has a slightly different design now you  can see up close this is the nylon band with the little loops in it for velcro and i find these  to be very comfortable after using these for a few days they they really start to get very soft  initially i do find them to be a little irritating but they breathe really well and if you give them  a couple days they're quite nice to use so we'll safety and one of the new things this can do is  detect crashes so car crash detection and that's thanks to updated sensors so internally we have an  accelerometer that's a little bit enhanced along with a barometer and then the microphone that can  sense impact noises and things such as airbags so if those deploy you can actually sense that  with this watch and it will prompt you to call emergency services so we'll hit continue and now  it's asking to set up cellular so we can set up cellular or not now so we'll set up cellular it  should contact my carrier and then just set it up automatically we'll give it a moment it says  already set up service transfer or add a new line so we'll transfer tap continue and it just said  continue setup that's all there is to it so it says installing will be ready soon so we'll give  it a moment and let's put on this watch band there we go slid in one  side and then the other here and let's wait for it now it's asking me  to set up apple pay we'll hit continue or we'll set it up later actually and now  it says the apple watch is syncing get to know your watch so you can go through this  learn all about it and honestly most of the changes this time around are from watchos  9. so a lot of new features from sleep to different health with different cycle tracking and  much more this is benefiting more from watchos 9 just like your series 7 or series 6 apple watch  is compared to new features in the series 8. now the watch restored now you can see the app in the  middle is missing for me that's actually called lumi so i'll need to install that app it's a  paid app but i'll install it a little bit later of course we have the new watch faces from watch  os 9 but nothing really specific to this watch so if we go to edit we can change whatever we had  whether that be the new metropolitan watch face or something else we can expect some other  new watch faces with the apple watch ultra otherwise we don't really have it so this has the  s8 system on a chip and it's basically the same thing with enhanced sensors this year so that  enhanced accelerometer for car crash detection a temperature sensor but it doesn't allow  you to take your temperature so that's for things like cycle tracking and sleep tracking  so if you go down there is no temperature app that's separate so you can't just check your  temperature with it and get an accurate reading it can sense your temperature actually changing  on your wrist so it may not have an accurate temperature as far as what you should be in the  u.s such as 98.6 degrees fahrenheit but it can sense the actual differences in things such as  sleep so if you wear this to bed or something else it will sense that within the health app it will  now begin to track your temperature so if we go under browse you can see under vitals you can put  in your own body temperature but it will change throughout the day and track the actual changes  not your overall temperature and give you an  accurate reading there it can actually check the  variation so you'll be able to find all of that  data after you've worn your series a apple watch  over some time also it has new dust resistance so it's water resistant up to 50 meters but now  has dust resistance with an ip6x certification it also has bluetooth 5.3 so that was added to  all the iphones this year with bluetooth 5.3 and that was the major difference so there's not  any real difference to this watch other than what i've already mentioned and now it's actually  installed my app but really there's not a huge change this year expect no difference in battery  life either they give it the same exact battery life the increase in battery life comes from  the low power mode if you need that but that disables a ton of different features and also  you get huge battery life on that apple watch ultra so we'll be testing that out as soon as i  can get my hands on that otherwise if you have a series 7 apple watch i would probably skip this  one unless you track your sleep regularly or you want it for cycle tracking it can actually track  ovulation using the temperature sensor so other than those couple of things i don't know that i  would upgrade this here it's the same cost i guess if you could get a big deal on this or a huge deal  on it it's the same sort of cost otherwise i don't know that i would get it it seems like with an  apple watch you want to skip every other year so maybe wait for series 9 or get the ultra if  you're into sports so if you want to use it for sports or diving or maybe hiking it's great for  things like that as well as tracking but it does have the new backtrack feature on it just like the  series 7 where if you go in77to the compass you have the all new compass app and you'll see that's the  first time i opened it but you have the back track feature where if you want to start that maybe  you're taking a walk to some place you're not familiar with it will actually leave waypoints so  you can sort of find your way back if you need to it can give you your exact latitude and  longitude so all of that's updated but that's updated on the series 7. if we actually  compare the speed of things so maybe go into the compass app here you'll see it's pretty instant  on both of them if we go into the temperature again it loads at the same time because it's  basically the exact same chipset in here now one other thing i wanted to check is the  overall software version since this actually came pre-installed with watchos 9 we'll go to  about and you can see the version is 9.020r 361 for the build number so nothing really  different in fact i don't think you could tell the difference between these without asking  someone so this year there's just not that big of a difference you have upgraded sensors inside with  the temperature sensor and no other major changes so again i'd probably skip every other year at  this point but if you don't have an apple watch this one will be great also if you don't need  all those sensors you may want to check out the apple watch se that one's pretty great and much  less expensive so that may be an option as well but let me know if you're picking up a series 8  apple watch or if you opted for something else i think the bigger upgrade this year of course  is with the apple watch ultra.
